One thing about the independent music scene is that talent alone isn't enough anymore. The ones who stand out are often the ones willing to put in years of work before the recognition catches up. That's what makes artists like Jay $kies worth paying attention to.

While many artists are still trying to figure out who they are, Jay $kies has spent nearly a decade developing his identity as both a singer and dancer. That commitment to performance was on full display recently when he stepped onto the stage at Bayside Bash for RaeMillion$' Got What It Takes showcase.

The tournament-style competition brought together some of the area's rising talent, placing artists directly in front of fans, producers, and local music platforms. Every performer had one shot to make an impression, and Jay $kies made sure his moment didn't go unnoticed.

From the moment the music started, it was clear he wasn't treating the performance like another showcase appearance. Practicing his kicks off backstage while the other artists kicked back. He mentioned during our interview that he had family in the crowd, he refused to get eliminated in the first round.

Performing a Pop and R&B record backed by his own choreography and confidence, Jay $kies made the stage his own. The crowd was following every movement as he blended vocals, dance, and showmanship into a performance that felt rehearsed, polished, and natural all at once.

That energy carried him through the first 2 determining brackets of the competition and into the championship round.

Although he ultimately finished 2nd to 3hreeland, that result did not tell the whole story of the night. Sometimes the biggest takeaway from a showcase isn't where an artist finishes, it's how many people leave talking about them afterward. By the end of the night, Jay $kies had accomplished exactly that by greeting and taking pictures with his new fans after the show.

To me, this showcase served as another reminder that stage presence is becoming more of a lost art in the present that has been dominated by social media and playlist placements.

While many artists focus solely on streaming numbers, Jay $kies appears focused on creating an experience through choreographed movement. The same kind of idea that has generated thousands of TikTok dance trends. That mindset extends beyond the stage.

Currently, he has three songs available on Spotify, City Lights, IDGAF, Back Seat Vibes, but music is only one piece of the puzzle. From song choreography, wardrobe and live performances, every aspect of his presentation feels intentional. Rather than simply releasing songs, he seems focused on building a complete identity around his artistry for the buildup before the drop.

Fans may not have to wait long to see where that vision leads.

During our conversation, Jay $kies teased an upcoming album, offering only a glimpse through cover artwork and hints of a music video currently in development for one of the project's tracks. While details remain limited, the announcement alone suggests there's more on the horizon than listeners have heard so far.

Every artist draws inspiration from somewhere, and Jay $kies proudly points to two of entertainment's most influential performers: Michael Jackson and Chris Brown.

The influence isn't difficult to spot. Not because he imitates them, but because he understands the importance of performance. The ability to sing, dance, engage a crowd, and create memorable moments has always separated entertainers from artists who simply record music. Jay $kies appears determined to master both sides of that equation.

What stands out most, however, is his ambition.

After growing up in Trenton, New Jersey, moving across the nation, and nearly ten years of performing, he still carries himself like someone with something to prove. Every showcase, every song, and every opportunity feels like another step toward a larger goal rather than a finish line.

In today's music industry, that's often the difference between artists who fade away and artists who continue growing. For now, Jay $kies remains one of the underground's best-kept secrets. A performer with the ability to control a stage, a catalog that's still expanding, and a vision that reaches beyond the next release.

The spotlight may not be fully on him yet. But if his trajectory continues in the direction it's heading, that may only be a matter of time.
