Not a work of fiction, the documentary The Last Twins tugs at the heart strings in this true to life film triggered by the master of inhumanity to man. Delving into the atrocities of the Holocaust, in this case German Dr. Josef Mengele, we get an inside look at how his one mistake saved many of the children from the furnaces at Auschwitz.

From recorded interviews of actual twins’ survivors that lived through the atrocities, we get the story. Included in the accounts they pay homage to adult Jewish prisoner Erno “Zvi” Spiegel’s for his bravery and cunning tactics amid the carnages by Mengele at Auschwitz. Spiegel was chosen by Mengele from the many prisoners at the concentration camp to assist in his bonding with the hundreds of child subjects for his sick and twisted experiments. During the time period until the liberation of the camp, Spiegel gave the children hope to survive while sneaking dozens out from the clutches of the monster.

The presentation by filmmakers Peltz and O’Neill is very cautious with mostly the information provided by the few surviving twins volunteering to come forward. However, Information about what Dr. Josef Mengele did to the many twins was noticeably absent in this documentary lessoning the punch it needed to make a point.

The Last Twins is being shown at select theaters around the country. The initial release theaters include Quad Cinema, New York; Laemmle Royal, Los Angeles; Laemmle Town Center 5, Encino CA; and Rialto Elmwood Cinema, Berkeley. Check your local listings for times and dates. The film has not been rated by the MPAA at this time, but does contain some disturbing scenes.
